Athlete: 1918-1920

    Always proud of what he called his "perfect training" at La Crosse, Jelly Roels moved easily from star athlete at the Normal School to one of the most remarkable high school coaching careers on record.

    He coached 14 championship high school teams in Michigan and Minnesota with 13 consecutive unbeaten seasons. While at La Crosse, Roels starred in football and basketball, serving as captain of the football team and in their third successive state championship in 1919. He also led the conference championship basketball squad in 1919 and 1920.
