Carlene Empanger earned four letters for the swimming team, garnering nine career National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III All-America honors.  She placed a career-best 13th in the 500-yard freestyle in 2004 and 2006 while finishing 14th in the 200-yard freestyle in 2005 and 15th in 2006. Empanger was 16th in the 1,650 freestyle in 2004 and also earned four NCAA Division III accolades in the relays. UWL placed ninth in 2004 and 10th in 2005 and 2006 in the 800-yard freestyle relay. She was on the Eagles' 11th-place 400-yard freestyle relay in 2005.  

Named to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) All-Time Team, Empanger won 10 individual league titles.  She captured four championships in the 500 and 1,650-yard freestyles (2003-06) while also winning two titles in the 200-yard freestyle (2005-06).  Empanger was a member of four WIAC winning 800-yard freestyle relays (2003-06).  She was selected the WIAC Swimming Performer of the Meet at the 2004 and 2006 league championships.  Empanger was a four-time WIAC Swimmer of the Week selection. 

A member of three WIAC Championship teams (2003-05), Empanger helped lead UWL to four top-20 finishes at the NCAA Division III Championships, placing fifth in 2004, 15th in 2005, 17th in 2006 and 20th in 2003.  She currently holds the UWL record in the 500 (5:01.51), 1,000 (10:39.80) and 1,650 (17:35.85) yard freestyle. 

She earned her bachelor's degree in chemistry from UWL in 2006 and her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Minnesota in 2011.
