Athlete 1962-1966
Coach: 1974-1992
In college from 1962-1966, Alan Freeman excelled on the wrestling mat. He earned the state collegiate runner-up title twice, along with being elected team captain his junior and senior years. He returned to UW-L in 1974 to teach and coach the university's grapplers.
He excelled on the sidelines, too. Until he rolled up the mat for the last time as coach in 1992, Freeman compiled a 128-90-5 record, including 13 All-Americans and four academic All-Americans. His coaching earned him Rookie Coach of the Year runner-up title for 1974-75--and later a 25-year service award--from the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
He was also recognized as NAIA District 14 Coach of the Year. Freeman, who also earned a master's at UW-L, is an associate professor of exercise and sport science.
